Its been 4 days now with no change but after reading this I have a bit of hope again that my site will return. I undid all my recent changes to the site thinking google penalized me for some reason because of it. Thanks for the insightful post! Same thing happened to our site, and now I've noticed it occurs periodically on various keywords where we rank in the top 20. I wonder if it's Google's sensitivity testing, to see if the absence of a top link leads to a drop in click-through. The site always returns to the search results, in close to the same location as when it dropped. I’m so glad you wrote this.
